They lie in the darkness, beads of light strewn across
the ground. Whither have they come from? They came from the stars. They are the
dew of the night. Where are they going? They are going into the heart of the
earth. The earth will absorb them. The soil will drink them in. The flowers and
trees will feel their warmth spreading from root to limb.
This drink fills our veins. It courses through our hearts.
We feel the song within us.
It is the song of the stars. It is the song we were born to
sing, but have forgotten. It is the song we knew in our childhood, but old age
has banished it from memory.
But it returns.
It returns with the dew of the stars and we anticipate it
each night. We look up to the stars and hope to see them fall. We hope to watch
the light shower around us. We hope for the meteor shower. We hope for the
rain. We hope to see it coming through the night. We hope to feel it dripping
through our budding leaves. We hope to watch it sink into the darkened earth.
We watch it disappear under the grass. We watch it sink
through the soil. We watch it travel through the rivers of underground water.
It washes through the veins of the earth and cleanses her. It cleanses the
earth from her impurities and then sinks deeper.
It runs through the rivers of silver and gold. It runs
through the quarries of garnets and opals. It runs through the purified rocks.
We feel the rain on our branches and look up. Not tonight.
Tonight the sky is clothed in clouds and the dew will not penetrate the
atmosphere. Perhaps tomorrow.
